“Temple Grandin” On Screen At Auditorium Dec. 1 As Part of “One Book” Program

“Temple Grandin”, the Emmy Award-winning film about Dr. Temple Grandin and autism, will be shown on December 1st at 5:30 p.m. at Capital Community College’s Centinel Hill Hall Auditorium on the 11th floor.

The College is a partner in Hartford Public Library’s 2010 One Book for Greater Hartford initiative and has sponsored a four-part film series; this is the last film to be offered.

One Book for Greater Hartford builds community around the shared experience of people reading and talking about a single title. For the last eight years, One Book has created a regional awareness of the importance of reading and literature as well exposure to new thoughts, ideas, and realities. This year’s title “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddonsparked features variety of programs exploring intellectual disabilities, particularly autism.

Dr. Temple Grandin is one of the most celebrated and recognizable people with autism; the film version of her life story, with Claire Danes in the title role, garnered ten Emmy Awards this year. The film runs for 109 minutes and will be followed by discussion facilitated by Diana A. Yeisley, from Connecticut Autism Speaks.

Marie Basche, director of the Academic Success Center at Capital Community College, noted, “Autism touches everyone in our community. Thanks to this year’s selection, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” HPL and its partners have a unique opportunity to engage readers around this important topic as well as to build greater sensitivity and understanding about all differences along the learning spectrum.”

This program is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the College’s outdoor parking lot located on Columbus Boulevard. For directions, visit http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/directions.htm.
